According to AS, barring a late change, Jagoba Arrasate will take charge at Santa Inés as Rayo’s new head coach. He is set to continue a project that has delivered a Conference final and a club record run of six consecutive top flight seasons.
Rayo’s hierarchy have long favoured Arrasate’s profile, though Rubén Albés and Óscar García were also sounded out in recent days. The feeling with the Basque coach tilted the decision, and he has repeatedly praised Vallecas, both the neighbourhood and the stadium.
A striker in the late 90s and early 2000s, he built his reputation on the touchline with Real Sociedad, Numancia and Osasuna. With Osasuna he won promotion in 2018-19 and reached the 2023 Copa del Rey final, losing to Real Madrid.
His most recent job was in Mallorca. Well versed in the division, he is viewed as capable of extending the style and identity forged under Iraola and Iñigo Pérez.
Pérez has been cast as his standout pupil, now it is the master’s turn. Arrasate would be the eighth coach since Raúl Martín Presa took ownership in 2011, joining Sandoval, Paco Jémez, Rubén Baraja, Míchel, Iraola, Francisco and Iñigo Pérez.
