Unai López ‘to renew’ with Rayo Vallecano | OneFootball

Unai López will renew his contract with Rayo Vallecano, according to Onda Cero.

The 30-year-old’s deal was due to expire at the end of this month.

He had proposals from Greece, Italy, France, the Middle East, the United States and Mexico, with Olympiacos, coached by Mendilibar and bound for the Champions League, the standout option. Athletic considered him but did not make a move.

López has prioritised Rayo because he feels Vallecas is home. He first arrived in 2017-18 and became a key partner for Fran Beltrán in midfield.

Under Míchel, Rayo won Segunda and sealed promotion to the top flight. That return propelled him back to Athletic, the club whose academy he had left years earlier, before he came back to Vallecas in 2021-22.

Since then he has been a mainstay, the creative foil to Pathé Ciss or Óscar Valentín. An undisputed starter for Iñigo Pérez, he consistently expressed a wish to stay, which is now being realised.

The decision matches the mood of the fanbase. Rayo have now taken the step and hope Luiz Felipe also remains.
