James Morrison would love Albion to keep influential coach Matt Gill as West Brom map out their backroom plans after securing Championship safety.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the Baggies legend was handed a permanent two-year deal as head coach this week after steering the club clear of relegation.

Gill, a 45-year-old Kent-born former midfielder and ex-Walsall loanee, joined Morrison’s staff on a short-term basis when Morrison was appointed until the end of the season. His position beyond the summer has not yet been confirmed.

He has spent most of his coaching career as Russell Martin’s assistant at MK Dons, Swansea, Southampton and Rangers, and Martin is currently out of work.

Morrison praised the staff for their impact around the club, said decisions would be assessed after the season and made clear he would like to keep Gill.

He also indicated he would like statistical analyst Damia Abella and goalkeeper coach Boaz Myhill to continue, while stressing there is a process to follow.

Gill is based in Norwich, a personal factor that could influence any decision. He is understood to have energised sessions at the Baggies’ Walsall HQ, with possession-focused work going down well with the squad.
