Manchester United are ready to reignite their interest in Javi Guerra, but face a fierce transfer battle with their Premier League rivals for the Valencia CF midfielder, according to a new report.

“A Primary Target”

Guerra, 23, emerged as a surprise name on United’s radar last summer as stalled contract talks at the Mestalla Stadium gave hope of a cut-price deal.

Reports in Spain suggested the Gilet native had given his “green light” to a move to Old Trafford, and a £21.5 million deal was close to being finalised.

And while this never materialised, United are understood to have maintained a strong interest over the past twelve months, with suggestions that a January swoop was considered to help bolster Michael Carrick’s midfield.

Sports Boom reveals Guerra is a “priority target” this summer. The Spain under-21 international “fits the analytical requirements” INEOS are looking to add to their midfield unit, with his “technical intelligence and age profile mak[ing] him an ideal candidate for long-term investment.”

Possessing an imposing 6’2″ frame, he combines the technical attributes every LaLiga midfielder must offer with strong defensive instincts and work rate. Four goals and six assists this season demonstrate a player capable of being decisive in the final third as well.

Valencia are said to be demanding around £35m for his services. A four-year deal, signed in August last summer, has reinforced Los Murciélagos’ negotiating position — as has the prospect of a bidding war erupting, given United are not alone in their admiration.

Eyed by Europe’s Elite

Sports Boom claims a “transfer battle” is set to take place as United are joined by Premier League rivals Arsenal and Newcastle United, as well as Atletico Madrid and Napoli.

The Gunners, fresh from being crowned champions of England, are wasting no time in looking to bolster Mikel Arteta’s squad. The Spanish manager is an “admirer of Guerra’s pressing capacity and positional discipline,” with scouts having been dispatched from the Emirates on multiple occasions this season.

Similarly, Newcastle United view the Valencia man as a “dynamic, high-output” midfielder, which matches the existing cohort at St James’ Park. The prospect of losing Sandro Tonali, potentially to Arsenal or Manchester United, may strengthen the Magpies’ resolve to strike a deal.

Further afield, Napoli are understood to be “tracking Guerra as part of their strategy to rejuvenate their midfield”, while Atletico Madrid may look to keep the Spaniard in La Liga as he fits Diego Simeone’s “philosophy of intensity and defensive discipline”.

Final Thoughts

The Red Devils are intent on signing three midfielders this summer to replace Casemiro, whose contract expires imminently, and Manuel Ugarte, who has proven a disastrous signing after his £50.7m capture from Paris Saint-Germain two years ago.

But the club are also looking for reinforcements on the left-hand side and up front, which will stretch the budget to its limit. As such, a relatively low-cost move for a Spanish maestro — with huge upside and a physical profile that translates well to the Premier League — may prove an astute signing if it enables investment elsewhere on the pitch.
