Mexico National Team head coach Javier Aguirre finally put an end to the rumors, the gossip, and all the behind-the-scenes drama with a statement that hit like a hammer: “Anyone who doesn’t report tonight at 8 p.m. is out of the World Cup.”

Clear enough? Thought so.

As Mexico enters a decisive phase in its preparation for the 2026 World Cup, Aguirre made one thing painfully obvious: discipline isn’t up for negotiation. And this all comes after a chaotic night that felt more like a telenovela than a national team buildup.

First, news broke that the Mexican National Team had granted Toluca a “special permission” to use Alexis Vega and Jesús Gallardo for tonight’s match against LAFC. Sounds harmless, right? Not quite.

Minutes later, Amaury Vergara, owner of Chivas, fired back… hard. He reportedly threatened both Aguirre and El Tri, demanding the immediate return of his players for Saturday’s second leg against Tigres in the Liga MX quarterfinals, arguing that the agreement between clubs and the national team had been violated.

Cue this morning’s emergency press conference

“Any player who doesn’t show up today is out of the World Cup,” Aguirre reiterated, doubling down on his stance. No gray areas, no loopholes, no “but my club needs me” excuses. If you’re not there, you’re out. Simple as that.

To make things even more… controlled, the press conference had no Q&A session. Just Aguirre, a microphone, and a very clear message—one that Hooligan was there to witness firsthand:

“Today is the big day: for us, the World Cup starts now. There’s a lot of excitement after 16 to 18 months of working together waiting for this moment. We’re all very happy; the players who were called up are expected to be here tonight at 8 p.m. for dinner. As you know, the statement is very clear: whoever doesn’t attend will face a financial penalty. In that sense, we cannot be flexible.”

Translation: show up, eat your dinner, or start planning your summer vacation.

Excitement is Here; Commitment is Mandatory

The ‘Vasco’ also highlighted the excitement within the squad after more than a year of groundwork, emphasizing that this moment essentially marks the beginning of the World Cup for them. At the same time, he stressed the commitment required to earn a spot on the final roster and pointed out the (alleged) support from Liga MX club owners.

“From day one I said it: no one is taking away the excitement of being here. Representing Mexico and playing a World Cup at home is priceless. Nothing out of the ordinary has happened—on the contrary, we’ve had support from everyone: the fans, the federation, the players, the executives. You can feel that support everywhere, in every greeting, every message of encouragement. We’re all in the same boat, and I think it’s important to say that.”

Yes, the same boat… even if a few people were apparently trying to row in different directions just hours earlier.

Appeasing Liga MX

Finally, Javier Aguirre acknowledged the role of Liga MX clubs, giving a special nod to Chivas and Toluca—yes, the same teams caught in the middle of the chaos—crediting them for their cooperation despite their own competitive commitments.

“I want to especially thank the clubs and their owners, who have treated us very well and contributed ideas. This is a project we presented some time ago, it was approved, and it has remained solid. I thank everyone, particularly Chivas and Toluca: Chivas was affected by the situation, and Toluca is competing in an international tournament, but even so they’ve shown full willingness to support the national team. Everything has been respected as agreed, without conditions.”

No conditions. No exceptions. And no special permissions. (Well… at least not anymore.)

So it Begins…

With everything now laid out—loudly and clearly—Javier Aguirre’s cycle officially kicks off at the High Performance Center with the 12 Liga MX players expected to be part of the World Cup squad:

Raúl Rangel (Chivas), Jesús Gallardo (Toluca), Brian Gutiérrez (Chivas), Alexis Vega (Toluca), Roberto Alvarado (Chivas), Israel Reyes (América), Armando González (Chivas), Guillermo Martínez (Pumas), Luis Romo (Chivas), Carlos Acevedo (Santos Laguna), Erik Lira (Cruz Azul), and Gilberto Mora (Tijuana).

Up next, Mexico will face Ghana, Australia, and Serbia in its final three friendlies before making its World Cup debut on June 11 at the Estadio Azteca against South Africa.

So yes, the message is clear: Be on time. Or watch the World Cup from home.
