La Liga president Javier Tebas has once again taken aim at UEFA’s European Commissioner for Sport, Glenn Micallef, over the decision to stage Villarreal’s December 20 clash with Barcelona in Miami.
Tebas accused Micallef and other critics of speaking in the name of fans while ignoring the vocal support from Villarreal supporters, who see the game as an opportunity for global visibility.
Just a few days after UEFA approved the fixture as an exception, Tebas used his X platform to highlight the potential benefits for Spanish football in North America.
“UEFA approves the match in Miami. The Villarreal fans support it: ‘It’s an opportunity.’
“But the European Commissioner for Sport, Glenn Micallef and some who call themselves the voice of the fans are protesting again.
“Curious: they speak on behalf of everyone… except those who actually want to play,” Tebas wrote, attaching a supportive letter from the Villarreal Supporters’ Club Association.
The letter praised the relocation as a “historic” chance for global expansion, sponsor growth, and enhanced fan experiences.
The match, which would be matchday 17 of La Liga, is proposed to take place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Barcelona are expected to earn between €5-6 million from the fixture, adding to the financial and marketing appeal.
Tebas has long been keen on exporting La Liga to the United States, having previously attempted to stage Girona-Barça and Barça-Atletico matches abroad, but without success. This time, he appears determined to see the plan through.
Not everyone is on board, however. Real Madrid have expressed concerns, arguing that moving the game alters the competition since Barça will not play at Villarreal’s home stadium. The players’ union, AFE, has also voiced objections.
Despite these criticisms, Tebas remains steadfast, arguing that the decision aligns with both the clubs’ wishes and the interests of the fans who support the initiative.
