Grégory Doucet was re-elected mayor of Lyon with 50.67% in the second round, defeating former Olympique Lyonnais president Jean-Michel Aulas, who turned 77 on Sunday.
L'Équipe reports that Doucet, 52, led a union of the left and greens that formed a technical merger after the first round with the LFI list of MP Anaïs Bellouassa-Cherifi.
Aulas, running as an independent and a newcomer to politics, had long topped the polls. He condemned that alliance and cited it in refusing a debate with Doucet between the two rounds.
He had already been put on the back foot, both on style and substance, during the only debate before the first round. From his campaign headquarters, he said he had lodged a legal challenge, arguing there were numerous irregularities.
Aulas also maintained it was unclear who had won Lyon, pointing to a difference of about 1,500 votes.
