Jesse Lingard has been named in the Copa Libertadores team of the third round after inspiring Corinthians’ 2-0 win against Peñarol. The attacking midfielder’s display capped a perfect start to Group E.

Conmebol announced the selection on its social channels, recognising the round’s standout performers. Lingard’s inclusion followed his direct role in the victory at Neo Química Arena.

Wearing No 77, he scored Corinthians’ second in the 25th minute of the first half, starting the move by winning the ball high up. Yuri Alberto drove forward and squared for the Englishman, who finished.

The goal secured the points and carried historic weight, making him the first English player to score in Libertadores history. A week earlier he had become the first from England to net in the Copa do Brasil.

Corinthians top Group E with 9 points from 3 matches, maintaining a perfect record. Platense are second on 6, with Peñarol and Independiente Santa Fe on 1 apiece.

Fernando Diniz’s side now switch to the Campeonato Brasileiro, visiting Mirassol on Sunday at 20:30. The match is at Estádio José Maria de Campos Maia and forms part of round 14.
