Joao Gomes is leaving Wolves to join Villa in a £38m move, having left the club’s training base in Portugal to fly back to the UK for a medical.

The transfer would be the biggest by some distance between the West Midlands neighbours, according to ExpressAndStar.com.

Villa turned to Gomes after Amadou Onana suffered a long-term injury, then saw Youri Tielemans join Manchester United for £38m earlier this week.

Talks have also taken place with Bayern Munich about a loan for Portugal international Joao Palhinha.

Atletico Madrid had been heavily linked after Wolves’ relegation from the Premier League, but no move materialised.

Talks between Villa and Wolves accelerated in recent days.

Villa are on course to sign Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi in a club-record deal before the end of the week, while right-back Andres Garcia has joined Getafe on a season-long loan.

Gomes joined Wolves from Flamengo in 2023 and made 130 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals and setting up six more.

Manchester United had also been credited with an interest, but Villa have made the decisive move.
