The Sun reports that John Terry is expected to be unveiled as part of a consortium planning a £14m takeover of League Two Colchester United.
The 45-year-old would join a growing list of former Premier League names buying into EFL clubs, and is said in the report to be excited about the deal.
He is expected to hold considerable influence at the Essex club, who sit 13th under manager Danny Cowley.
Terry’s interest follows a separate bid fronted by his former Chelsea team-mate Alexandre Pato, which was abandoned in February. Pato had been in talks and attended the Fleetwood Town match as a guest of chairman-owner Robbie Cowling.
In a joint statement, Aspire Media Group and Sports Alpha Capital said they would not proceed with the proposed acquisition, that discussions had concluded, and that SAC would keep exploring opportunities in English football, while Colchester focused on the season and its ambitions.
Terry’s nephew Frankie is registered at Colchester, though he has spent part of this season on loan at National League Braintree Town, according to the Mirror.
High-profile investors have entered the pyramid in recent years, including Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney at Wrexham, and Snoop Dogg at Swansea City.
