Jordan Henderson has left Brentford after a mutual termination, with a move to Chelsea understood to be nearing.
According to Sunderland Echo, new Blues head coach Xabi Alonso wants added experience after an unsuccessful bid to prise Granit Xhaka from Wearside this summer.
Brentford confirmed on Wednesday that Henderson, who joined only last year, had departed by mutual agreement. In a farewell message, he thanked the owners, staff, team-mates and supporters, and said he was proud of what the team achieved last season.
Meanwhile, Danny Welbeck, another former Sunderland player, is understood to be closing in on a switch to West London from Brighton and Hove Albion. The 35-year-old spent the 2010/11 season on loan at the Stadium of Light.
Welbeck is set to undergo a medical at Chelsea after agreeing personal terms on a two-year deal. A fee is believed to be in place, although it remains undisclosed.
Since 2020, Welbeck has scored 51 goals and supplied 18 assists in 201 appearances for Brighton across all competitions, including 13 in 37 Premier League matches last season. He is Albion’s record Premier League goal-scorer.
