Wesley, the Roma right-back and former Flamengo player, has been ruled out of the World Cup after a grade 3 injury to his left thigh.
He left the Brazil match against Egypt on Saturday (06) in the first half, visibly distressed. According to Coluna Do Fla, subsequent tests showed a recovery period beyond the tournament, so the coaching staff made an immediate cut.
Jorge Sampaoli, who championed Wesley at Flamengo, posted a message on social media expressing sadness at the interruption of the player’s dream, wishing him a swift recovery and stressing that he has a big future with other World Cups ahead.
Wesley endured a difficult start under Vítor Pereira, then became Flamengo’s first-choice right-back under Sampaoli in early 2023. His form earned a move to Roma in a €30 million transfer, worth R$163 million at the time.
To cover the loss, Carlo Ancelotti has called up Éderson of Atalanta. The switch also benefits Flamengo’s Danilo, whose ability to play at right-back and centre-back gives extra tactical options, increasing the likelihood he features during the tournament.
