José Martínez has said farewell to Corinthians in a social media video, posted one week after his contract termination was logged with the CBF’s BID. The clip shows his highlights and goals, with a voiceover lauding the club and its supporters.
According to Meu Timao, Corinthians will cover 30% of his wages from February to December this year, excluding January, and has paid for surgery to repair the right ACL. Despite a deal running to December 2027, the club will have no financial obligations to him next year.
The board had been exploring an exit after the midfielder reported back more than a month late due to passport renewal issues in Venezuela. He returned to CT Joaquim Grava injured, a setback that could keep him out for the whole of 2026.
During his holidays, footage emerged of him playing in a friendly event in Venezuela with protection on his left knee, and in other clips he was limping. That, combined with the late return, displeased coach Dorival Júnior and the hierarchy.
Martínez joined in August 2024 from Philadelphia Union in a $2 million deal, about R$ 10.9 million at the time, and Corinthians were later sanctioned by Fifa for late payment. He made 70 appearances, scored two goals, registered two assists and was part of the 2025 Paulistão and Copa do Brasil title-winning squads.
