Benfica face uncertainty over their head coach, with José Mourinho or Marco Silva in the frame, and the coming weeks are key.
A Bola reports that a seven million euros release clause in Mourinho’s contract, three million net, expires on Monday, 25 May. From Tuesday, 26 May, any suitor, including Real Madrid, would need to negotiate directly with Benfica. The presidential vote in Madrid follows Enrique Riquelme entering the race.
Agent Jorge Mendes, who represents both managers, is seen as a potential plus for all sides. Mourinho has yet to confirm his departure from Benfica, and Silva is viewed as a potential successor but has not taken a decision on the club’s approach.
Mourinho’s exit, once expected this week, has been set back. Florentino Pérez, if he wants the Special One, would need to win the seven June election to have the authority to appoint him.
As for Marco Silva, he is at the end of his contract with Fulham after five years. The London club have offered him a new deal, but he remains undecided about his next step.
