Liverpool’s midfield rebuild may be shaped as much by market reality as tactical need. On Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, Dave Davis and David Lynch discussed how rising Premier League valuations could force Liverpool to look elsewhere, with Ligue 1 emerging as a logical hunting ground.
The context is stark. Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson has been valued around £120m, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton at £100m and West Ham’s Matheus Fernandes at £80m. For a Liverpool side needing several additions under Andoni Iraola, those figures make domestic shopping difficult.
As Lynch put it, “if you’re Liverpool and you’ve got to fill multiple positions for a certain amount of money over this summer then you may be better off kind of shopping in other leagues.”
Davis framed the issue around Anderson’s reported valuation, saying it showed “how mental the English midfielder market” had become.
Lynch agreed, pointing out that Premier League clubs no longer need to sell unless offers reach extraordinary levels.
“Premier League clubs who’s lower down, who were battling relegation for much of the season is able to sort of demand those sorts of money because they’ve got Premier League cash themselves.”
That has consequences for Liverpool. A club cannot spend heavily on one midfielder when several squad areas still need attention.
When Davis raised Mamadou Sangare of RC Lens and Lamine Camara of AS Monaco, Lynch said the direction made sense.
“Yeah, exactly. because the prices there seem more reasonable.”
He explained why clubs in France are more likely to sell at realistic levels.
“Ligue 1 sides are not awash with Premier League cash.”
Lynch added that those clubs may still add “a little Premier League tax,” but the market is very different from England.
“They know when the money starts to get to a certain level they have to sell for the good of the club.”

Davis suggested Liverpool may be “driven to France by what’s happening in the Premier League right now,” and Lynch’s response supported that view.
He said the market is “dictating” that it is “safer and probably more sensible” to look at “clubs and players in France.”
That is where Sangare and Camara become interesting. Neither was presented in the podcast as a guaranteed Liverpool target, but both fit the broader logic of the discussion. Liverpool need midfield options, Premier League prices are rising sharply and France may offer a more workable route.
Lynch’s wider point was about strategy. Liverpool cannot afford to chase every inflated Premier League valuation.
“You’ve got to box clever.”
That phrase captures the challenge. Anderson, Wharton and Fernandes may all have qualities Liverpool admire, but fees of £120m, £100m and £80m would quickly distort a summer rebuild.
For Liverpool, Ligue 1 may not simply be a cheaper alternative. It may be the smarter market, especially if Iraola needs multiple signings rather than one headline addition.
