Liverpool Continue to Prioritise Bradley Barcola Despite Ferran Torres Links

Liverpool’s pursuit of a new wide forward remains one of the biggest talking points of the summer, with Barcelona’s Ferran Torres among the latest names to be linked with a move to Anfield.

However, during the latest Media Matters podcast on Anfield Index, Dave Davis and David Lynch poured some cold water on suggestions that the Spain international has moved ahead of PSG winger Bradley Barcola in Liverpool’s thinking.

While Torres may represent an attractive market opportunity, Lynch made it clear that the evidence still points towards Barcola being Liverpool’s primary attacking target.

Ferran Torres remains an interesting option

Introducing the subject, Davis noted that Torres’ contract situation naturally makes him an attractive proposition.

“Barcola is the obvious link but the World Cup winner Ferran Torres is coming up with a few sources as well. Only a year, it’s actually there’s two years, but it’s only a year left to go on his contract there. So could represent a market opportunity.”

That combination of pedigree, experience and a potentially favourable transfer fee explains why Liverpool supporters have become increasingly interested in the Barcelona forward.

Lynch acknowledged there may have been initial enquiries.

“I think Torres will be someone that they’ve inquired about.”

Even so, he quickly explained why the growing speculation should be treated carefully.

Liverpool’s priority remains Bradley Barcola

Lynch described how transfer stories can quickly evolve beyond the available evidence.

“I note that the initial reporting that started the subsequent reports, which is how this is always working these days, is like someone mentioned something in a piece that Ferran Torres is someone they maybe asked the question about and then it goes from they’ve asked a question about him to he’s the number one target as the spin off reports then come and I just don’t believe that to be honest.”

Rather than suggesting Liverpool have changed direction, Lynch believes Torres has become the subject of exaggerated reporting following what may have been routine background work.

He added that he has yet to hear anything that points towards Liverpool actively pursuing the Barcelona forward.

“I’ve not heard anything about Ferran Torres, as good a player as he is.”

That distinction is important. Admiring a player or making preliminary enquiries does not necessarily indicate an imminent transfer.

If there was any uncertainty over Liverpool’s preferred target, Lynch removed much of it during the discussion.

“I think Barcola would be much higher up that list. In fact, kind of know he’s much higher up that list.”

He then explained exactly why Liverpool’s pursuit has not yet accelerated.

“The way it was put to me around Barcola is it’s not about whether they like the player or not. It’s just about kind of the feasibility around fees and wages.”

According to Lynch, Liverpool’s admiration for the PSG winger has never been in doubt. The challenge is whether a deal can realistically be completed.

He concluded by reinforcing that view.

“He’s still the one I’d say to watch.”

Lynch also suggested that patience may be required before Liverpool’s next attacking signing becomes clearer.

“It just might not be like super imminent.”

With PSG continuing to shape their own squad, Liverpool may need to wait before opportunities emerge in the market.

That leaves Ferran Torres in an interesting position. Lynch did not dismiss the possibility that Liverpool have explored the situation, but equally offered no indication that negotiations are progressing.

Instead, his analysis points towards a familiar conclusion. Torres may remain on Liverpool’s radar, yet Bradley Barcola continues to be the winger Liverpool admire most.

Based on Lynch’s insight, Ferran Torres is a player worth acknowledging, but Barcola remains the benchmark against which every other attacking target is currently measured.
