Juan Mata has undergone surgery after suffering a left elbow fracture during A-League round 23. The former Valencia CF midfielder was injured playing for Melbourne City.

According to Superdeporte, the Spaniard was hurt against Wellington Phoenix at AAMI Park after a blow late in the first half. He stayed on until the 88th minute. Subsequent tests confirmed a fracture to his left elbow, leading to an operation.

The operation was successful. His recovery will dictate any timeline, and no return date has been set.

On social media he thanked the hospital and the medical team involved, adding that it was one day closer to returning.

The coaching staff, led by Arthur Diles, are focused on supporting his rehabilitation with the objective of helping him rejoin before the season ends.

Mata came through Real Madrid’s academy, then shone for Valencia, Chelsea, Manchester United and Galatasaray, before spells in Japan and Australia. His honours include the FA Cup, Champions League and Europa League, and he was part of Spain’s 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 triumphs.

He joined Valencia in 2007 and became a key figure over four seasons at Mestalla. His form underpinned the 2008 Copa del Rey win.
