He had been in the city despite now serving as sporting director at Estepona. On 23 September he joined Raúl García at a talk at Torre BAT organised by Emen4sport and the University of the Basque Country.

The day before the heart attack he attended the first league game of Surne Bilbao at Bilbao Arena. This health scare comes in a difficult year for Guerrero, whose wife died in April, prompting many messages of support from Athletic and the wider game.

Guerrero has been leading the sporting structure at Estepona, in Segunda Federación, since December 2025. In May he confirmed he would continue this season after the team secured survival.

Previously he coached Spain's under-15, under-16 and under-17 sides from 2018 to 2023, and briefly managed Amorebieta at the start of 2024-25. His early coaching included work in Athletic's academy and Málaga's technical programme.

He spent his entire playing career at Athletic, making 430 appearances and scoring 116 goals across 14 seasons before retiring in 2006. He captained the 1998 runners-up that returned to the Champions League and won 41 Spain caps, playing at two World Cups and Euro 96.
