Júlio César rules out working at Flamengo amid Boto uncertainty | OneFootball

Júlio César has ruled out taking a role at Flamengo, saying he lacks the experience for an off-field job as scrutiny grows around football director José Boto.

After Filipe Luís was dismissed, president Bap considered hiring a new figure to replace the Portuguese director and fans pushed for Júlio César to be appointed. The former goalkeeper said he would not take the job.

"I would not accept the invitation to work at Flamengo, because I have no experience and I have not prepared for this. People think that, because you have a nice history with the club, you could do a good job off the pitch. But it goes far beyond that. As a goalkeeper I was fantastic, in my opinion, but they are different things."

He spoke on the programme Desafio do Profissa.

Boto’s position has been strained since last year, with noise around Arrascaeta’s renewal, matters involving De La Cruz and, most recently, the manner of Filipe Luís’ exit. Those issues have distanced the Portuguese from the squad.

Flamengo intend to remove Boto only once a successor is secured, mirroring Filipe Luís’ departure after agreement with Leonardo Jardim. Bap has yet to decide whether the next model will use one or two figures, with an aim to blend a ‘boleirão’ profile with a more executive approach.

"A lot of nonsense is talked, a lot of lies, things are invented. I am here to say we are hepta-tri champions. Let it be the start of a great year for us," Bap said after the Carioca title.

Edu Gaspar, formerly of Arsenal and Brazil and in the process of leaving Nottingham Forest, admitted Flamengo made contact. Fábio Luciano was also approached and chose to remain with ESPN.
