Kylian Mbappe has already secured a place among the defining figures of modern World Cup history, and at 27 he remains firmly on course to add further chapters. Across three tournaments, the France captain has combined elite output with the capacity to shape the biggest occasions, a record that continues to place him in rare company.
His first major breakthrough came in 2018, when he emerged as one of the stars of the tournament in Russia. Mbappe scored his first World Cup goal against Peru at the age of 19 years and 183 days, becoming France’s youngest scorer in the competition. He finished that campaign with four goals, including one in the final as France beat Croatia 4-2 to win the trophy for a second time.
If 2018 announced Mbappe to a global audience, 2022 reinforced his status as the leading attacking force of his generation. He ended the tournament as the top scorer with eight goals in seven matches and delivered one of the greatest individual performances seen in a World Cup final. His hat-trick against Argentina made him the first player since Geoff Hurst in 1966 to score three times in the showpiece, although France were beaten on penalties.
That final, despite the result, underlined the scale of Mbappe’s influence. Few players have managed to dominate a World Cup final in such fashion, and fewer still have done so while carrying the expectation attached to a nation seeking back-to-back titles.
His latest contribution came in France’s 2-0 win over Morocco in Boston, a result that booked a place in the World Cup semi-finals and kept alive hopes of a third consecutive final appearance. The evening did not begin smoothly. Mbappe won a first-half penalty, but after a lengthy delay he saw a tame effort saved by Yassine Bounou.
Top-level forwards are often defined by their response to setbacks, and Mbappe’s was immediate. He recovered to score after the interval and then created the second goal for Ousmane Dembele, ensuring France moved on without late complication. With eight goals and three assists in the tournament, he is firmly in the race for both the Golden Boot and Golden Ball.
Alongside his international career, Mbappe’s club future has long generated intense interest. Liverpool were among those heavily linked during his rise at Monaco, and there have been previous indications that discussions took place. One account of that pursuit has since become well known, with Jürgen Klopp recalling to Magenta TV: “We flew from Blackpool to Nice. In Nice, the entire Mbappe family boarded a private jet with five rooms. We really went all out. Then we flew around in a circle, talked with the family, ate good food. We couldn’t be seen. We flew in a circle. It was fantastic. And then he went to Paris!”

At club level, Mbappe ended last season as Real Madrid’s leading scorer with 42 goals and seven assists in 44 appearances, despite the Spanish side finishing second in La Liga and ending the campaign without silverware. For France, though, the immediate focus is clear. With Mbappe driving them forward, another deep World Cup run feels entirely plausible.
