FLW's Huddersfield Town fan pundit acknowledges the pressure on Kevin Nagle's shoulders to get the next managerial appointment right

For the third time in the space of a year, and the sixth time since Kevin Nagle took over in June 2023, Huddersfield Town are looking for a new manager.

While Nagle has shown his ambition during his nearly three years as Huddersfield owner, the club on the field has regressed, falling into League One in his first season at the Accu Stadium, and failing to make the third-tier play-offs in the two that have followed.

Now, Terriers fans are getting restless at the direction of the club, and while Liam Manning's recent departure was due to the ongoing personal matters, the fact that they're once again in need of a new man in the dugout is incredibly frustrating.

Some are starting to lose faith in their owner, but that can immediately be restored if, sixth time lucky, Nagle can get this managerial appointment right and Huddersfield can finally match their lofty ambitions by challenging for the League One title next season.

Ultimately, though, if it goes the other way, and the new boss doesn't hit the ground running, the pressure, which is already nearly as high as it can get, will increase even further on the higher-ups at the Accu Stadium.

FLW's Huddersfield fan pundit, Graeme Rayner, feels that Nagle knows that, though, and he, more than anyone, wants this next appointment to be the one who guides them back to the Championship.

"I think there's a huge amount of pressure on him, and he knows that. He's not naive, and he totally understands it," he said.

"Ideally, we wouldn't have been relegated from the Championship, but we were under his stewardship with managerial appointments that didn't go well. Darren Moore and Andre Breitenreiter were not up to the task.

"And then we've had two years in League One, where we'd have wanted one, and we're guaranteed to have at least three, with a succession of managerial changes and issues."

Rayner understands that their latest managerial casualty walked away for personal reasons, rather than bad results, but also acknowledges that the more cynical, demanding members of the fanbase feel that the board should have known about Liam Manning's situation before hiring him.

Additionally, results hadn't improved under the former Bristol City and Norwich City boss, anyway, so many weren't expecting much improvement under him next season.

"The Liam Manning situation with him leaving the club. Clearly, there are other issues away from footballing matters with his own personal circumstances," he continued.

"But, arguably, some fans would say that this should have been taken into consideration more when he was appointed, granted we don't know what conversations were had before.

"But, while he was at the club, he had a promising start, but it very quickly started to feel like de ja vu, so a lot of the supporter base are piling the pressure on. I'm not one of them, but some of them don't care for Nagle's ownership.

"I don't know how that bears on an owner; if he walks away, then we might be screwed financially, so we need to try and give him support where we can, but yeah, big, big pressure to get it right."

Kevin Nagle would likely have been preparing for the possibility that Manning wouldn't return to the Accu Stadium as soon as he was given compassionate leave back in March, yet at the moment, no decision has been made.

The easy option seemed to be to promote the interim managerial duo, Martin Drury and Jon Stead, for the coming season after they navigated a tough end to the current campaign. Reports earlier this month stated that this may be the case.

But Nagle himself has stated on X, where he is active in replies to Huddersfield fans, that interviews are ongoing about the vacant role, indicating that he's looking for someone a little more experienced, which Rayner believes to be a good thing.

"I think it's telling [the pressure] that we haven't had an announcement yet," the fan pundit added.

"Town fans expected Martin Drury and Jon Stead to be announced and appointed, which would have been a slightly safe option, if not underwhelming.

"But Nagle has tweeted in reply to a Town fan that interviews are ongoing, so that would suggest that they are casting a wider net, which I think is probably right.

"Hopefully it won't be too much longer until an announcement is made, but yes, it's a huge, huge decision."

Ultimately, there is arguably no more pound-for-pound pressure on a managerial role in the EFL next season than there is at Huddersfield, given the investment off the field that has led to lofty expectations on it.

If things start to show signs of a wobble early on, it's been seen over the past season how toxic the Accu Stadium can get. But then, on the flip side, if the new manager hits the ground running, having those tens of thousands roaring the team on can prove invaluable to their title charge.
