Kevin Phillips believes Millwall may try to keep Anthony Patterson after his impressive loan spell, with West Brom and Southampton understood to be monitoring a possible Sunderland exit this summer.

"I think Millwall might have something to say about that, because I gather they would like to keep hold of him," he told Sunderland Echo.

Patterson, 26, helped Sunderland win promotion from the Championship last year but lost the number one spot under Regis Le Bris to Robin Roefs, a signing from NEC Nijmegen. He joined Millwall on loan in January, linked up with former Sunderland boss Alex Neil, and helped them reach the play-off semi-finals, where they were beaten by Hull City.

"Listen, he's done brilliantly, Anthony Patterson. He's a quality keeper. Any team that gets his services next year has done brilliant business."

"From a selfish point of view, with my connections at West Brom, I'd love to see him there. I think James Morrison would get the best out of him. So if they can secure his services, it'd be a great, great signing for them."
