There could hardly have been a more fitting way for Vincent Kompany to celebrate his 100th match in charge of Bayern Munich than with a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid at the Bernabéu.

It was another statement result in what has become a remarkable second season under the Belgian, whose side have developed into one of Europe’s most prolific attacking teams during the 2025/26 campaign.

Kompany’s appointment in 2024 was not universally greeted with enthusiasm. The former Belgium captain had just overseen relegation from the Premier League with Burnley, and many questioned whether he was ready for a job of Bayern’s magnitude. The club, however, saw something different.

Only a year earlier, Kompany had guided Burnley to the Championship title in dominant fashion, recording 101 points. His front-foot approach transformed the Clarets into one of the division’s standout sides, and although that style proved harder to sustain in the top flight, Bayern believed it suited both their squad and their long-term vision.

In his first season in Munich, success was measured rather than spectacular. Bayern secured the Bundesliga title comfortably, finishing 13 clear of Bayer Leverkusen, but fell short in the cup competitions and in Europe.

This season, however, the progress has been far more striking.

Bayern are on course to defend their league title and remain firmly in contention in both the DFB-Pokal and the UEFA Champions League. Regardless of how those campaigns conclude, there is little doubt the team has taken a significant step forward under Kompany in his second year at the club.

Their attacking numbers underline that progress. Bayern reached 100 league goals at record pace this season and now sit just one short of matching the tally produced by Gerd Müller’s legendary Bayern side of 1971/72.

Across all competitions, they have already equalled last season’s win total and currently boast the most prolific attack among clubs in Europe’s top five leagues, scoring 148 goals at an average of 3.36 per match. Heavy victories have become routine rather than exceptional.

Only Hansi Flick’s Barcelona come close, with 127 goals at a significantly lower scoring rate.

Whatever silverware follows this season, Kompany’s Bayern are already building a reputation for attacking football that could define this era at the club for years to come.
