According to Sunderland Echo, Kristjaan Speakman could be set for a return to football with FC Copenhagen, with talks said to be at an advanced stage.
Speakman spent six years at Sunderland as sporting director, key in the rise from League One to the Premier League. He left in February as Florent Ghisolfi took charge of football operations, having opted for a break while considering his next move.
Copenhagen finished seventh in the 12-team Superliga last season, yet remain among Denmark’s biggest clubs, with regular Champions League appearances and a title win the previous campaign.
The Englishman looks set to lead a rebuild after a bleak year in which the club entered the relegation phase for the first time. They parted with sporting director Sune Smith-Nielsen in February after poor results, and he now appears to be in pole position to replace him. Copenhagen will play in the Conference League next season after beating rivals Brondby on the final day.
After his February exit, Speakman said leading Sunderland had been the honour of a lifetime, praising staff and players for their commitment. He thanked his family and the fanbase, and highlighted pride in restoring a team shaped by the region’s identity. He wished the club well for the remainder of the season.
