Kristjaan Speakman could return to football at FC Copenhagen after leaving Sunderland in February.

Sunderland Echo reports that the former Sporting Director has been a contender for the vacancy and that talks are now advanced. If appointed, he could be asked to lead a rebuild after one of the club’s most difficult seasons.

Copenhagen finished seventh in the 12-team Superliga last season, entering the relegation phase for the first time. They remain one of Denmark’s biggest clubs, having featured regularly in the Champions League and won the title the previous campaign.

The club parted company with sporting director Sune Smith-Nielsen in February in response to poor results, and Speakman is said to be in pole position to succeed him. They will play in the Conference League next season after beating rivals Brondby on the final day.

Speakman spent six years at Sunderland and was central to the rise from League One to the Premier League. He departed as Florent Ghisolfi assumed ultimate responsibility for the football operation and has since been weighing up his options. After leaving, he issued an emotional message expressing pride in the project, gratitude to family, colleagues and players, and praise for the club’s supporters.
