Leeds United took a major step towards Premier League safety with a 3-1 home win over Burnley, moving nine points clear of 18th-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

Anton Stach fired in from 25 yards inside eight minutes, then Noah Okafor volleyed home on 52 minutes before Dominic Calvert-Lewin made it 3-0 from close range, and Loum Tchaouna replied. Leeds saw it out with little alarm. yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk highlights three key conclusions.

Stach’s opener underlined his long-range threat. It was his fourth Premier League goal from outside the box this season, no one has more, with Dominic Szoboszlai and Antoine Semenyo level. The 6ft 4ins German excelled again, boosting his Player of the Season case.

Leeds started on the front foot after last week’s slow Wembley opening. That early breakthrough was their 24th first-half effort of the league campaign, behind only Arsenal and Manchester City. That approach lifted the Elland Road atmosphere.

Leeds are virtually safe and have climbed above Newcastle United into 14th, level with Crystal Palace and three behind Sunderland in 12th. Paraag Marathe said in the summer anything above 18th would be gravy, and every place brings extra competition revenue. Stach said the final three games are important, the mood is good with the fans and they are hopefully set for more wins, and Daniel Farke will not ease up.
