Birmingham City have endured a disappointing end to their first season back in the Championship.

The Blues were aiming to compete for promotion straight to the Premier League just 12 months on from coming up from League One.

Owners Knighthead Capital, led by Tom Wagner, are aiming to bring the Midlands outfit back to the top flight, where they have not competed since 2011.

Chris Davies is now under significant pressure from a section of the supporters following this drop in form in recent weeks, with the team winning just one of their last eight league fixtures.

The form of key players has also been called into question, alongside some of their transfer business in the last 12 months.

Players like Kyogo Furuhashi have been unable to make the kind of impact that was expected of them when they joined, and the winger is now set for a spell on the sidelines due to a shoulder injury that has cut his season short.

When asked if Furuhashi has now played his final game for the club, FLW’s Birmingham fan pundit Jason Moore claimed that it should be, as he simply hasn’t been good enough of an addition to the squad.

He has been underwhelmed by his impact, and believed that the warnings around his arrival should been heeded more seriously than they were at the time of his move from Rennes.

“It kind of has to be his last appearance for the Blues,” Moore told Football League World.

“Even the chances he’s had to play and the chances he’s missed, he’s not been good enough.

“Three goals in all appearances, it just hasn’t been good enough.

“Unfortunately, some football clubs get them where the transfer just hasn’t worked and you can only defend him for so long.

“He’s had six months at Rennes where he’s not scored, and you hopefully put that down to not getting on with the boss, but then he comes to us and he’s been absolutely pony.

“To be fair, a couple of Celtic journalists at the start of the season thought they had the best of Kyogo and thought he might not be up for it.

“Looks like they’ve been proven right.”

Moore sees no way back for Furuhashi in the side with this injury, and has urged Birmingham to look to cash in on him this summer in order to get his wages on the books, and potentially generate a fee from his sale.

“I don’t see any way back, just cut your losses, get him off the wage book, try to recuperate some of the fee we paid for him, whatever it was,” he continued.

“Just do your best and get him off the books, and just go and get someone who is young and hungry, for me.

“Just start recruiting that way, or go and get someone who is Championship proven.

“I would’ve snapped your hand off at this point now, instead of having Kyogo, having Oli McBurnie.

“Which is, at the start of the season, sounds like a crazy thing to say, but 100 per cent has to be his final appearance for us.”

Furuhashi has made 28 appearances in Davies’ side this season, but has started on only eight occasions.

The former Celtic star had to wait until January to score his first league for the club, coming off the bench to find the back of the net in a 2-0 win against League One bound Sheffield Wednesday.

He also scored in an EFL Cup win against Sheffield United, and in the third round of the FA Cup as the Blues beat Cambridge United 3-2.

Furuhashi will miss the remainder of the campaign, with just five fixtures to go and Birmingham in 16th.

Next up for Davies’ side is a home clash against seventh place Wrexham on 12 April in a 12pm kick-off.

Birmingham should cut their losses on Kyogo Furuhashi

Furuhashi was a risky signing when Birmingham made the move for him because he’d done terribly in his six months at Rennes.

While he was once a top performer at Celtic, it had been a while since he’d shown himself capable of reaching that level and the Blues had to know it was far from guaranteed he could get there again.

It was reported that the Midlands outfit paid up to £10 million to sign him, and it’s hard to imagine them recouping that fee this summer.

But if they can offload his wages and earn back some of that figure then it’s a move that Birmingham should pursue.
