LaLiga’s Retro Matchday brings a nostalgia-tinged 21.00 Sunday as Villarreal visit Athletic at San Mamés.
El Periódico Mediterráneo reports that veteran Villarreal fans will think back to Víctor, Craioveanu and Riquelme, while Gerard Moreno, Comesaña and Parejo now lead. The modern stadium stands a short walk from the old San Mamés.
Villarreal’s shirt, revealed on 19 March at Madrid Fashion Week, nods to the late 90s and early 2000s. Blue shorts return, with an embroidered historic Joma logo and club crest, plus a collar and blue side stripes recalling Riquelme’s years.
The launch featured Víctor Fernández 'Chingu', Gheorghe Craioveanu and captain Gerard Moreno, who will wear the strip in Bilbao.
Athletic look further back, drawing on 1970 to 1975. A closed-collar red and white shirt returns at San Mamés.
That era brought sporting and institutional change, marked by the 1973 Copa and a defining philosophy. José Ángel Iribar and Txetxu Rojo shaped the legacy, with Gaizka Toquero fronting the unveiling.
Both clubs have pushed retro-themed content all week and will continue through to kick-off.
LaLiga has planned a full throwback across the round. Four teams keep their usual strips, with Barcelona, Rayo and Getafe citing logistics yet still taking part, while Real Madrid has distanced itself in its own battle with LaLiga.
Coverage will adopt vintage-styled scoreboards, transitions, captions and graphics to mirror the look of past decades.
