With only a few days separating us from the Coppa Italia final against Inter Milan, Lazio have resumed work on the training ground.
The Italian capital side fell short in Saturday’s dress rehearsal, with Cristian Chivu’s men prevailing by three unanswered goals. Nevertheles, this league result won’t matter for the Aquile if they can have the last laugh on Wednesday.
According to Il Corriere dello Sport, Maurizio Sarri is expected to make five changes to his starting lineup, reinstating those who were rested at the weekend, while regaining the services of others who should overcome their physical problems in time.
Alessio Romagnoli, Mario Gila, and Adam Marusic will all retain their starting berths in front of Edoardo Motta, whereas Luca Pellegrini will make way for Nuno Tavares, who has recently established himself as the ultimate first choice at left-back.
The Roman newspaper considers Patric the favorite to start in the Regista role, as he can provide more defensive cover than Nicolo Rovella, who would instead settle for a second-half cameo. The Spaniard picked up a slight knock on Saturday, but should be fit to start.
On the other hand, Danilo Cataldi’s availability remains uncertain. The Lazio youth product missed the last three games with an adductor problem. While he’s expected to rejoin his teammates in training on Monday, he still has to regain his athletic condition.
In the box-to-box roles, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru will be relegated to the bench in favor of Kenneth Taylor, while Toma Basic should maintain his spot.
The in-form Tijjani Noslin is expected to lead the attack at the expense of Daniel Maldini, who has now lost his starting berth. Gustav Isaksen will get the nod on the right wing, as Matteo Cancellieri is hampered by a slight issue he picked up in the league fixture against Inter. Finally, Mattia Zaccagni should overcome the knock he suffered in recent days to lead his teammates to the field.
Aside from the change in personnel, CdS emphasizes the importance of entering the game with a different mentality. The Lazio players were perhaps ‘too respectful’ of their opponents, and paid the price by conceding early.
Curiously, they only improved when Alessio Romagnoli left them a man down, as they shook off the fear and started to exploit the spaces Inter left at the back. A similar approach would be needed to achieve a glorious result on Wednesday
