Cruzeiro midfielder Gerson plans to prove in court that Flamengo authorised his departure in August 2025, with a leaked audio of football director José Boto among the evidence.
In the recording, Boto is heard accepting the player’s choice, saying moves to improve earnings are part of the game and that Gerson had decided to go, while acknowledging his importance to the club. “I understood, as a professional, the decision Gerson had already made,” he told ESPN, although he stressed he wanted to keep the midfielder.
He also argued the buyout was lowered because they expected Marcão to push for an exit in each window, adding it would be unrealistic to think he could influence Gerson’s decision given the player had renewed months earlier.
In April 2025, Flamengo extended Gerson’s deal to 2030 with a pay rise and a reduced release clause. Zenit (RUS) then paid the club and secured his exit without negotiations.
The new contract also carried an indemnity clause for unilateral termination, requiring payment equal to the remaining contract balance. As he left shortly after the renewal, Flamengo are seeking R$ 42.7 million and regard the move as a resignation and unilateral termination by the player.
