Lee Grant hopes an extended break between games can help Walsall full-back Roman Dixon improve his fitness, according to ExpressAndStar.com.

The 21-year-old was taken off 18 minutes into his comeback during a 6-1 defeat to Stevenage in the EFL Trophy last week.

Grant said they are still waiting on the full assessment, so the picture is not yet complete. He added that Dixon is presenting well and he does not think they will be without him for long, but they need to break the cycle, build him up without undue risk and increase his minutes.

Dixon has not featured in League Two since his debut in the 3-0 win at Gillingham on 15 August. He joined in the summer after leaving Everton, then injury kept him out of the next seven matches.

The postponement of this weekend’s home game against Crawley Town could help his progress. Having missed most of pre-season, he has been playing catch-up, and the gap offers a chance for him and one or two others to top up their work.

Grant hopes the pause will leave them better placed for Fleetwood and the upcoming fixtures.
