Leeds United are in talks to sign Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford, BBC Sport reports. The England international could leave the Etihad just a year after returning there.

Newcastle and Aston Villa also held an interest in him this summer. Villa, though, now expect Emi Martínez to stay put.

A new goalkeeper is a priority for Leeds after Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier both left Elland Road this summer. Lucas Perri and Alex Cairns remain on the books.

But Perri lost his place to Darlow in the second half of last season and did not feature in the Premier League again after a 4-3 defeat to Newcastle on 7 January.

Trafford was part of England’s World Cup squad this summer, though he did not play. At City, he made 17 appearances last season, only four of them in the Premier League, as Pep Guardiola’s side won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.

He started out at City before loan spells with Accrington and Bolton. He then left for Burnley in 2023 and made 73 appearances for the Clarets. City activated a buy-back option last summer worth £27m plus add-ons.

His path back into the side was then blocked. City signed Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain in September, restricting his game time to the domestic cups.

Leeds’ interest gives Trafford a route back into regular first-team football. That is something increasingly out of reach at City with Donnarumma established as first choice. Whether a move happens will depend on City’s valuation and the structure of any deal.
