Leeds United’s strongest XI already looks different six weeks after their Premier League return concluded, with a goalkeeper reset and a reshaped defence.
The Whites secured survival with three matches to spare, then ended with a 3-1 defeat at West Ham, who are now bound for the Championship. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the 10 June retained list confirmed Illan Meslier’s exit and Facundo Buonanotte’s return to Brighton, while talks continued with Karl Darlow, Alex Cairns and Sam Byram, all now technically free agents.
Early this month, centre-back Pascal Struijk completed a £20m move to Brighton, a major departure that affects selection in the preferred 5-3-2.
Harry Wilson’s free transfer from Fulham is done, although not yet announced, and will be factored in once confirmed.
Goalkeeper: Lucas Perri. With Darlow finishing last season as first choice but currently a free agent, Perri is considered number one for now.
Right-back: Jayden Bogle is the clear pick, with James Justin a versatile alternative across the back line.
Centre-back: Joe Rodon is an obvious pick following Struijk’s exit.
Centre-back: Jaka Bijol impressed in the second half of last season and looks best in the middle of a back three.
Centre-back: James Justin is primed to come into the XI and may have been viewed as a starter anyway.
Left-back: Gabi Gudmundsson is first choice and is one of four Leeds players at the World Cup.
