Sky Italia reports that Leicester City have rejected Cremonese’s approach for Caleb Okoli, with the club indicating he will not leave this month.

Okoli’s future has appeared uncertain at times over the past 18 months, yet he is currently a starter. He has partnered Ben Nelson in the last three matches and kept Jannik Vestergaard on the bench on New Year’s Day, the Dane recovering from a head knock.

It is not clear whether Cremonese’s bid was a loan or permanent, but Leicester’s stance rules out a reunion. Okoli previously spent a season there on loan from Atalanta, making 27 appearances and helping them win promotion from Serie B four years ago.

Since then Cremonese have been relegated and promoted back to Serie A, and now have Jamie Vardy on their books. They sit 12th after 17 matches, defying pre-season expectations.

Leicester are reluctant to lose a centre-back given Harry Souttar’s ongoing injury issues and doubts around Wout Faes. The Belgian is understood to be seeking an exit to boost World Cup hopes, and was left out at Bramall Lane, with Bade Aluko and Wanya Marcal on the bench ahead of him, suggesting he has played his final game.

Julian Carranza was also absent as his loan is set to be cancelled, with a permanent move from Feyenoord to Mexican side Necaxa to follow.
