The 38-year-old shot stopper is departing Goodison Park for a second time this summer, following the expiration of his contract with the Toffees.

Begovic most recently played in the Championship during the 2023/24 campaign when he made 45 appearances for Queens Park Rangers under the management of Gareth Ainsworth and then Marti Cifuentes.

Now, as he prepares to be a free agent from July, it could well be that he returns to the second-tier, with two clubs in particular looking into a deal for the Bosnian.

Leicester & Southampton want free agent Asmir Begovic

According to Football Insider, both Southampton and Leicester City have made contact with Begovic over a move this summer.

It has been said that both are keen to add to their goalkeeping stocks in this transfer window, following their relegation from the Premier League last season.

Danny Ward and Daniel Iversen have both departed the King Power Stadium, with the former linked with a move to newly-promoted Wrexham and the latter recently completing a move to Preston North End on a free transfers, whilst rumours persist over the future of Mads Hermansen.

Hermansen, who joined the Foxes in the summer of 2023, has been linked with a move away to both West Ham United as well as Manchester United.

At St Mary’s, there is an expectation that Aaron Ramsdale departs the club with owner and chairman Dragan Solak admitting his departure is likely, whilst Joe Lumley has also been released by the Saints.

Ramsdale is also the reported subject of interest from West Ham, with Graham Potter apparently keen on replacing Alphonse Areola.

The report suggests that Begovic is being targeted likely as back-up to a number one option at both the Foxes and Southampton. He has performed that role at a variety of clubs, most notably following an £8 million move to Chelsea about a decade or so ago.

Asmir Begovic possesses a wealth of experience for either Leicester City or Southampton

Begovic began his professional career back in 2005 with Portsmouth and had loan spells with La Louviere, Macclesfield Town, AFC Bournemouth, Yeovil Town and Ipswich Town before departing Pompey for Stoke City in 2010.

In five years for the Potters, Begovic established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, making 172 appearances across all competitions, and famously scoring a goal from inside his own box against Southampton.

After Stoke, he spent a couple of seasons at Chelsea before a permanent move back to Bournemouth, where he went on to make a further 113 appearances, despite loan stints at Qarabag and AC Milan during his time at the Vitality Stadium.

Following his departure from Bournemouth, he moved to Everton for a couple of years as cover once again before that move to QPR. He departed QPR last summer and returned to become an understudy at Goodison Park for the 2024/25 season.

Internationally, Begovic was capped 63 times for the Bosnia-Herzegovina national team, having represented Canada at U20 level beforehand - he has a lot of experience at international level and also at top-flight club level which would make him a good backup option in the Championship.
