Leonardo Jardim appointed Flamengo head coach after Filipe Luis exit | OneFootball

Flamengo have appointed Leonardo Jardim as head coach, less than three months after he left Cruzeiro. The club said in a statement that the 51-year-old Portuguese has signed until December 2027.

A Ligue 1 winner with Monaco in 2017, Jardim managed the club from 2014 to 2018 and again in 2019. He resigned from Cruzeiro in December, 10 months after arriving, to protect his physical and mental health.

He took his first training session on Wednesday and will be officially presented on Thursday.

Jardim replaces Filipe Luis, who was dismissed overnight from Monday to Tuesday, shortly after an 8-0 win over Madureira in the Campeonato Carioca semi-final second leg at the Maracana. The Brazilian is 40.

Despite operating with the biggest budget in South America, Flamengo have begun the year poorly. They lost the Supercopa do Brasil to Corinthians 0-2, then the Recopa Sudamericana at the Maracana to Lanus 2-3.
