Leonardo Jardim v Léo Jardim: Flamengo coach has faced Vasco keeper in France | OneFootball

The Maracanã hosts a namesake duel on Sunday at 16:00 Brasília time as Flamengo face Vasco in the Campeonato Brasileiro. Coach Leonardo Jardim meets goalkeeper Léo Jardim for the third time.

According to Globo.com, their first meeting came in December 2019, when Léo Jardim, then a Lille reserve, started a Coupe de la Ligue last-16 tie against Monaco, managed by the Portuguese Leonardo Jardim. Lille won 3-0.

At 2-0, Léo Jardim saved a Slimani penalty early in the second half. Christophe Galtier’s Lille also featured Luiz Araújo, now a Flamengo forward.

Lille reached the semi-final but were eliminated by Lyon. On that run, Thiago Mendes, now Vasco’s captain, was on the opposing side and converted a penalty past Léo Jardim.

Léo Jardim joined Lille in 2019, was loaned to Rio Ave and Boavista, then returned as first choice in 2021 and 2022. Vasco, back in Série A in 2023, signed him and he has since been a cornerstone.

Leonardo Jardim made his name at Monaco, winning the 2016/17 title and ending PSG’s dominance. He also reached the Champions League semi-final, knocking out Manchester City.

After a 2020 sabbatical he won the Saudi league and Asian Champions League with Al Hilal, then led Shabab Al Ahli, Al Rayyan and Al Ain. In 2025 he took Cruzeiro back to the Libertadores, and this year has started strongly at Flamengo, already a state champion after two months.
