Le Mans were 2-0 up at Bastia in Corsica when the match was halted seconds from time after trouble in the stands. If the result is confirmed, they will join champions Troyes in Ligue 1 next season and Saint-Étienne will have to go through the play-offs. Bastia would drop to the new Ligue 3.

Referee Ruddy Buquet said in a brief press conference that the game would not resume, without confirming the outcome. beIN Sports reports that a commission is to meet within hours to decide the official result.

16 years on, Le Mans should be back in Ligue 1. Their win in Corsica also effectively sealed Bastia’s relegation, which prompted flares on the Furiani pitch and forced the stoppage.

Saint-Étienne, third and hunting second place, did their bit by thrashing already doomed Amiens 5-0 at a raucous Geoffroy-Guichard. Yet Le Mans’ victory ended hopes of automatic promotion.

Elsewhere, Dijon sealed promotion to Ligue 2 with a 2-1 win at Le Puy-en-Velay. Sochaux lost 2-1 at Châteauroux and must wait until Friday, though their superior goal difference suggests promotion. Fleury-Mérogis have 54 points, Rouen and Versailles 52, in a fight for third and a play-off spot.

Red Star drew 1-1 with Montpellier to secure fourth and will host play-off 1 on Tuesday against Rodez, fifth and unbeaten in 2026 after a 2-1 win at Annecy. The winner visits Saint-Étienne on Friday, then faces Ligue 1’s 16th on 21 and 24 May.

Reims beat Pau 5-3 through a Keito Nakamura hat-trick but miss out. At the bottom, Laval beat Boulogne-sur-Mer 2-1 to reach a relegation play-off on 19 and 24 May against National’s third. Saint-Brieuc will play in the fourth tier next season.
