Limoges CSP has officially filed a Europe-wide trademark for the slogan “À jamais les premiers”, under the mark “CSP Limoges, à jamais les premiers”, covering France and the United Kingdom.

For many supporters the phrase is closely associated with OM, popularised after the club’s Champions League triumph in 1993.

Limoges points to its status as the first French club to win a champions’ competition in Europe, lifting the EuroLeague on 15 April 1993 by beating Benetton Treviso 59-55. OM won the Champions League 41 days later, defeating AC Milan 1-0 on 26 May.

“We are the first in our sport, that is certain, but we do not intend to stop supporters of any sport from chanting this slogan. That includes OM. We are simply taking protective steps as part of creating an asset portfolio, which is why we filed it,” said Thomas Jacquemier, the club’s chief executive, speaking to Ici Provence.

Limoges executives held talks a few months ago with Pablo Longoria, then OM president, with both sides not seeking conflict over the slogan.
