Liverpool are one step closer to triggering €60m clause

Could Liverpool soon trigger a €60m release clause? It feels as though they're a step closer to doing so.

Arne Slot is out as Liverpool head coach and that means changes are on the way. Andoni Iraola will almost certainly be the next appointment at Anfield, bringing a different style of play and new ideas.

It's what Liverpool needed, admittedly. Things had gotten so toxic that they couldn't really continue.

And what this absolutely means is a fresh start for some. Even players who aren't at the club anymore but might find a way back under a new head coach.

One of the more notable is Jarell Quansah. The Liverpool academy star left the Reds last summer after failing to hold down a regular spot under Slot.

That was always strange, however, as Jürgen Klopp held the centre-back in very high regard. He was actually starting him over Ibrahima Konate by the end.

Slot just didn't seem to fancy him but Liverpool quite plainly felt there may be a long-term place for Quansah at Anfield. They put a €60m buyback clause in his deal, after all, and it's one they can trigger next summer.

It's now far, far more likely that Liverpool do that with Slot gone. Quansah should, in theory, fit Iraola's style of football far better and there's no question that they'll be seeking a new centre-back in 2027.

Virgil van Dijk will be out of contract, as will Joe Gomez. We don't expect either will renew.

The stage is set for Quansah, then. Slot's exit moves them closer to bringing him back - so let's see how the next year progresses.

Jarell Quansah: Situation Summary

Leverkusen Campaign and Stats

As of 2 June 2026, Jarell Quansah has concluded an outstanding debut domestic campaign with Bayer Leverkusen. Following his £35 million move from boyhood club Liverpool last summer, the 23-year-old English centre-back quickly adapted to German football. Quansah made 28 Bundesliga appearances, logging 2,302 minutes on the pitch, and showcased a sharp attacking threat by scoring four goals from the backline. His highly consistent performances anchored Leverkusen's defence, capping off his season with a final-day goal in a 1–1 draw against Hamburger SV on 16 May before earning a place in England's World Cup squad.

Buy-Back Clause and Anfield Return

Anfield officials are monitoring Quansah’s stellar progress closely as they face an impending defensive shortage. Following the news that Ibrahima Konaté will depart Liverpool on a free transfer this summer, the Reds are considering triggering Quansah's hefty £70 million buy-back clause to bring him home. While the clause drops to £52 million in 2027, Liverpool may force the issue early.
