Liverpool's defence is one of their main problem areas.

Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson have both exited Anfield and, although the Reds have some options among their ranks that could be used to replace them, their team doesn't scream 'title challengers' at the moment.

Indeed, Andoni Iraola will still be getting used to his new surroundings and things could very easily change over the next month or so but, at the moment, it's unclear whether their first-team squad will actually be better off this season than it was last term.

There are a lot of problems that the Reds still need to solve so, if they don't get start to get all of their ducks in a row soon, things could end up going pear-shaped rather quickly.

Wellity Lucky is going to be loaned out by Liverpool

As mentioned, Liverpool's defence is rather weak at the moment.

In fact, Luke Chambers has actually been used as a centre-back throughout most of the Reds' pre-season due to their lack of depth in that area.

Of course, it's a good chance for Chambers to prove his worth to Iraola but, going into the Premier League season, Liverpool need more experienced players to steady the ship.

Indeed, Virgil van Dijk, Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet should all be back by then but, with the number of injuries that the Anfield outfit have suffered, it's unclear how long they'll be available for.

This has led to several rumours being shared about the future of Liverpool's defence and now, the Daily Mail have given an insight into what is going to happen to Wellity Lucky.

"Defender Wellity Lucky made a return from injury at the weekend, and will also be loaned out," they wrote.

Liverpool can't continue getting rid of defenders without signing any

Liverpool's squad depth has been one of the main problems that they have faced over the last couple of years.

Even though their starting XI has been fairly solid, whenever an injury has occurred, their back-up options have never been as good.

And, while you don't expect clubs to have 22 world class players among their ranks, you'd at least expect them to have more options than just their youth prospects.

However, if Liverpool don't sign any new defenders, that's what their future is going to look like.

Indeed, Iraola is a much better manager for Liverpool to do this with than Arne Slot but, if they want to get back to the top of the Premier League table, they're going to need to make some serious moves before it's too late.
