Liverpool Beat Everton 2-1 to Stay Perfect in Merseyside Derby Clash

Gravenberch and Ekitike Deliver Early Blows

Liverpool made it five wins from five as they maintained their flawless start to the Premier League season with a 2-1 victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield. Arne Slot’s side struck early when Ryan Gravenberch’s clever lofted finish from Mohamed Salah’s pass put the champions in front after just 10 minutes.

Gravenberch, who has been one of Liverpool’s standout players this term, turned creator before the half-hour mark. His perfectly weighted pass released Hugo Ekitike, who calmly slotted beyond Jordan Pickford to double the lead and underline Liverpool’s early dominance.

Liverpool’s squad depth was once again on display. Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, two marquee summer signings worth a combined £241m, remained on the bench until the second half, highlighting the options at Slot’s disposal.

Everton Fight Back After Interval

David Moyes’ Everton side grew into the contest after the break and were rewarded just before the hour. Jack Grealish’s inviting cross found Iliman Ndiaye at the far post, and the forward teed up Idrissa Gueye to lash a rising drive past Alisson, giving the visitors hope.

The goal galvanised Everton and forced Liverpool onto the back foot for a spell, with Alisson called upon to deal with a number of set-pieces and crosses. But despite the pressure, Slot’s side showed defensive resilience to see out the result and maintain their 100 per cent record.

Slot’s Selection Calls Paying Off

Arne Slot opted to keep Isak and Wirtz in reserve, and his faith in Gravenberch and Ekitike paid off handsomely. Gravenberch’s composure in midfield has been a feature of Liverpool’s play this season, and his finish showcased the technique of a player brimming with confidence.

Ekitike, meanwhile, continues to strengthen his claim for a central striking role. His movement and finishing ability give Liverpool a different dimension in attack, and his understanding with Gravenberch is becoming a key asset.

Title Defence Gathering Momentum

This 2-1 Merseyside derby win keeps Liverpool at the top of the table and underlines their determination to defend their crown. Slot’s side did not have everything their own way in the second half but still found a way to win, a hallmark of title-winning teams.

Liverpool’s blend of established stars, big-money recruits and emerging performers is keeping competition fierce within the squad. With Wirtz and Isak still bedding in, and Salah orchestrating attacks, there is a growing sense that Liverpool are building a team capable of dominating again this season.
