Tuesday saw Newcastle United have an offer of around £65m turned down by Eintracht Frankfurt for Hugo Ekitike.
That then followed on the same day by Liverpool making an approach to Newcastle United, indicating they would be prepared to pay £120m for Alexander Isak.
Now on Wednesday, The Athletic reporting (see below) that Liverpool have made contact with Eintracht Frankfurt, as they are now interested in signing Hugo Ekitike.
Interesting to see how this all plays out.
Newcastle United wanting Hugo Ekitike to play alongside Alexander Isak, even though so many in the media and in rival fanbases want to refuse to believe this could be possible!
Liverpool wanting Alexander Isak, as indeed many clubs do.
Liverpool now potentially turning to Hugo Ekitike because of an acceptance that Alexander Isak is an impossibility to sign this summer.
From a Newcastle United perspective, you should surely be looking at this as United in a very strong position here when it comes to Liverpool.
Probably three possible outcomes. Newcastle sign Ekitike to play alongside Isak, Newcastle keep Isak but Ekitike goes to Liverpool, Newcastle get Ekitike but sell Isak to Liverpool and get a massive chunk of money on top buying the French striker.
In reality, I can’t see that third option happening.
So I reckon at best, Newcastle have Isak and Ekitike next season, at worst, Newcastle have Isak but not Ekitike and instead pursue a different striker option to play with Alexander Isak.
It is Liverpool who are under pressure, desperately needing a new first choice striker, as was always the case this summer, but now only four weeks on Friday until their first Premier League game of the season.
‘Liverpool have made contact with Eintracht Frankfurt over a possible move for Hugo Ekitike, who is also being targeted by Newcastle United.
The Athletic reported on July 14 that Newcastle tried to secure Ekitike via an offer worth around €75million (£64.9m; $86.9m), which was turned down by Frankfurt.
They have now received an approach from Liverpool, too, as the Premier League champions work to bolster their attack with a new striker.
It comes amid Liverpool’s pursuit of Newcastle forward Alexander Isak. The Anfield club have communicated their interest about doing a deal in the region of £120m for the 25-year-old Sweden international.
Though Liverpool have approached Newcastle over Isak, the St James’ Park club’s stance is that the Swede is not for sale.
