Dominik Szoboszlai is getting close to signing a new contract with Liverpool in a major boost for new head coach Andoni Iraola.
The midfielder has entered the last two years of his current deal and Liverpool were at risk of either losing him on a free transfer or being forced to sell him for a cut-price fee.
But Liverpool have been in talks with Szoboszlai for months and are nearing an agreement with the 25-year-old.
Szoboszlai, a £60m signing from RB Leipzig in 2023, was Liverpool’s outstanding player last season, scoring 13 goals, recording 12 assists and standing in at right-back.
The Hungary captain is seen as a potential future Liverpool captain but the Merseyside club have been embroiled in issues with contracts in recent seasons, losing Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer after failing to agree a new deal and seeing Trent Alexander-Arnold reject an extension to go to Spain instead.
Keeping Szoboszlai would help Iraola rebuild. Winger Victor Munoz has become his first signing while defender Jeremy Jacquet, whose move from Rennes was arranged in January, will arrive.
Iraola has also said he is keen to keep Curtis Jones, who is in the last year of his deal, and will give Harvey Elliott a chance on his return from a loan spell at Aston Villa.
