Liverpool are prepared to sell Darwin Nunez to Atletico Madrid at a discounted rate in order to sign Julian Alvarez from the Spanish side.
Arne Slot wants to bring in a centre-forward to strengthen the Premier League champions, with Alvarez near the top of the club’s shortlist. The Argentina international has scored 27 goals in all competitions for Atletico Madrid this season, following his arrival from Manchester City last summer.
Atletico are reluctant to sell the striker, but Liverpool are hopeful the addition of Nunez in the deal can persuade the Rojiblancos into a sale. Diego Simeone is an admirer of Nunez, who is expected to leave Liverpool at the end of the campaign.
The Uruguayan has failed to find consistency in his performances at Anfield and was linked with the Saudi Pro League in January. Saudi sides were prepared to offer around £70m to sign Nunez in January, but Liverpool are reportedly prepared to let him join Atletico at a discounted rate.
According to the Anfield Watch, Liverpool will let Atletico sign Nunez for £35m – provided the Reds are given favourable terms to sign Alvarez.
The latter is understood to be open to a return to the Premier League, where he could unite with Argentina teammate Alexis Mac Allister at Anfield. Alvarez scored 36 goals in 103 games for Manchester City across two seasons and won two league titles, the Champions League and FA Cup among his honours.
Alvarez is one of several forwards Liverpool are considering, alongside Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike.
