Liverpool are securing a partnership for the ages as they sign an elite talent. The future is incredibly bright.

Liverpool made moves to lock down their future at centre-back over the last year. It started with Giovanni Leoni, who joined from Parma last summer as one of the brightest centre-back talents around

Injuries have interrupted his debut campaign, of course, but he'll be back. And when he does return, he'll have Jeremy Jacquet to contend with - another incredibly bright prospect from Rennes.

But Leoni's age also means he bridges the gap to the youth team and that team is about to have one of Britain's greatest prospects at centre-back. A future partnership with Leoni is firmly in the works.

Giovanni Leoni: Situation Summary

ACL Injury and Recovery Progress

The 19-year-old Italian defender, who joined Liverpool from Parma for £27 million in August 2025, suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) just 81 minutes into his debut against Southampton in September. Reports from March 2026 indicate he has impressed coaching staff at the AXA Training Centre with his dedication to recovery and his quick adaptation to life in England. While he is not yet back training on grass, he has met all recent gym-based milestones.

Future Outlook

Arne Slot has publicly reiterated that Leoni remains a central part of the club’s long-term plans. Despite the upcoming arrival of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes, the club views Leoni as a future pillar of the defence. He is expected to remain sidelined for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign, with a target return date set for the start of pre-season training in July 2026.

Analysis: Dara Jikiemi is coming

Teamtalk reports that Dara Jikiemi has rejected a three-year contract with Celtic in order to accept a move to Liverpool. Jikiemi is one of the most talked-about names in British youth football right now and someone who looks destined for stardom.

Liverpool sign the 16-year-old for their youth team but there’s no question here that a long-term partnership with Leoni is on their minds. After all, there’s only a couple of years between them - even if the Italian has been a senior player for over a year.

This is one to look out for, then. Liverpool’s signing of Jikiemi comes right on the back of Jacquet and Leoni, securing a remarkably bright future in the position.

Now they’ve got to develop them, of course, but there’s no question that Liverpool have set themselves up for something special.
