Lloyd Jones and Tyreece Campbell responded to Karlan Grant's emotional message after he mad his first league appearance since rejoining the club.

Karlan Grant’s second spell at Charlton Athletic got off to the perfect start as Nathan Jones’ side beat Derby County 2-1 at The Valley.

The forward came through the ranks at the Addicks, and he enjoyed a real breakthrough year in the 2018/19 campaign, where he scored goals regularly in League One.

That prompted Huddersfield, who were a Premier League club at the time, to sign Grant, and he has continued to play in the top two divisions over the years for West Brom, whilst he had a loan spell at Cardiff.

However, with Grant’s contract expiring at Albion in the summer, he was on the lookout for a new club, and Charlton finalised an emotional return to the club for the player.

So, Grant’s first league game back at The Valley was always going to be a big occasion for the attacker, and it’s fair to say it was a dream start for the player back in the red shirt.

Firstly, the hosts picked up all three points, as goals from Lloyd Jones and Tyreece Campbell ensured they overcame the Rams, who had taken the lead thanks to a Sammie Szmodics effort.

Grant played a big role in the win, as he capped off his impressive all-round display with an assist for Jones’ header, as his teasing ball was perfect for the defender to attack.

And, the 28-year-old took to Instagram after the game to reflect on the return, as he thanked the fans for the way they received him.

“Special feeling being back out there in front of you all. It means everything to me.”

That prompted plenty of responses from Grant’s teammates past and present, and goalscorers Jones and Campbell were among those to react.

The centre-back left an A to reference the assist Grant provided him with, whilst Campbell posted two love hearts to his new teammate.

Charlton have done some decent business this summer, but the deal to bring Grant back to the club on a free transfer could be the best signing of the lot.

Whilst he was inconsistent at Albion over the years, he has good pedigree for this level, and even though it’s only one game, he proved yesterday that he still has a lot to offer.

Grant was a constant threat throughout, and his ball in for Jones was very good, and that goal came at a crucial time as Charlton battled back to get the win.

Clearly, the move to the Addicks was an emotional one for the player, and the fans will be delighted to see how much it meant to him to get back out there in a Charlton shirt.

As well as that, the reaction from the players, including Jones and Campbell, suggests that Grant has been very well received since his arrival, and that team spirit will be crucial if this is going to be a successful season for the club.

Of course, it’s too soon to get carried away after one game, but the boss will be very pleased with how the team performed, and the way Grant has immediately settled, so it will be interesting to see how this campaign plays out for the forward.
