Young stars continue to impress up and down the country

Heading into an extended international break, London’s loan players will have been looking to make a lasting impression before they head off with their respective countries.

Another incident-packed weekend threw up plenty of storylines, with some players continuing to excel while others made a timely impression after a difficult start to the season.

Standard Sport assessed five of the best performances from players on loan from the Premier League’s clubs in the capital…

Julian Eyestone keeps clean sheet in dominant Rotherham win

The on-loan Brentford goalkeeper kept a clean sheet as Rotherham beat Northampton Town 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Despite Rotherham’s dominance, Eyestone stayed alert to deny Northampton a late equaliser with a sprawling save at the feet of Harvey Saunders.

The American youth international has started Rotherham’s last two league games, earning his place in the team from Ted Cann.

Rotherham currently sit 14th in the League Two table, having taken nine points from their opening seven games.

This is the 20-year-old’s first experience of senior football following his promotion to Brentford’s first team in July last year.

Rio Cardines continues sensational assist run

Crystal Palace loanee Rio Cardines made it six assists in his last seven league games as Bristol City got back to winning ways with a 1-0 victory at home to Watford.

The Trinidad & Tobago international set up Dom Ballard with a superb inswinging left-wing cross, showcasing his ability to impact the game off both flanks.

While traditionally a right-back, Cardines has predominantly been used on the left hand side of Bristol City’s defence so far this season.

The 20-year-old is among the leading assist-makers in Europe and drew praise from Bristol City manager Michael Skubala.

“Rio Cardines is still learning the game tactically, but his record of assists this season is exceptional. We knew we were signing a very talented young player, but his dead ball striking is so impressive,” Skubala said.

“We just have to look after him and hope he gets back from the international break in one piece. That goes for all the players involved for their respective countries.”

Ryan Kavuma-McQueen grabs crucial assist in Portsmouth draw

17-year-old Ryan Kavuma-McQueen made a telling contribution as Portsmouth rescued a 2-2 draw at home to Blackburn Rovers.

Having taken the lead early on through Zak Swanson, Portsmouth found themselves behind after goals from Oladapo Afolayan and Ryoya Morishita.

That was until Kavuma-McQueen, on loan from Chelsea, stole on to a loose ball in behind before cutting in and rifling a left-footed shot at goal.

His strike deflected kindly off Colby Bishop to bring Portsmouth level in the 74th minute.

Kavuma-McQueen has impressed since joining John Mousinho’s side and has played a part in all seven of Portsmouth’s league games this season.

Oliver Irow continues to shine as Plymouth underline promotion credentials

Following on from his superb strike against Barnsley last weekend, Tottenham forward Oliver Irow continued his fine run of form with a brace for League One promotion hopefuls Plymouth Argyle.

Plymouth are up to third in the table after beating Blackpool 4-2 away from home to make it three wins in a row for The Pilgrims, and Irow has earmarked himself as a key part of the team.

After finding themselves behind to a deflected Jordan Brown strike on the half-hour mark, Irow scored either side of the break to turn the game on its head.

His first goal was a smartly taken finish inside the area that beat the goalkeeper with pace and accuracy. He then swept home at the far post to give Plymouth the lead after half-time.

Irow now has three goals in his last two games for Plymouth and is quickly endearing himself to supporters, with chants of “Irow again ole ole” ringing out at Bloomfield Road.

Harrison Murray-Campbell helps KV Kortrijk to first win

Chelsea loanee Harrison Murray-Campbell played the full 90 as Belgian side KV Kortrijk earned their first win of the season.

After six successive losses, KV Kortrijk beat SK Beveren 1-0, with centre-back Murray-Campbell producing an excellent display to secure their first clean sheet of the campaign.

The 20-year-old is highly regarded at Chelsea and was among the nominees for Premier League 2 Player of the Season last year.

It has been a difficult start to life on loan for Murray-Campbell, but he will hope to push on now after securing a much-needed win.
