Having been put into administration last summer, Sheffield Wednesday supporters rejoiced because it meant that their owner and chairman Dejphon Chansiri would depart the club.

The following few months and entire Championship season saw them fade towards an inevitable relegation due to the ravaging of their squad and points deductions.

Some pride was restored on the final day of the campaign as a defeat of West Bromwich Albion took them to zero points to finish the season, while the EFL confirmed that they would not start on another points deduction in League One.

Now, with that out of the way and the takeover of the club led by David Storch, Wednesday can begin to feel more positive once again and they have already been busy this summer with the signings of Ricardo Santos, Jordi Liongola, Callum Slattery and Sil Swinkels.

Now they are reportedly closing in on the signing of Louie Barry, too, so FLW have taken a look at what Barry is earning at Aston Villa and how that compares with Wednesday’s wage bill last season.

As he nears a move to Sheffield Wednesday on a permanent basis, having spent time on loan at their Steel City Derby rivals Sheffield United last season, Louie Barry represents a coup for The Owls, having excelled in League One previously at Stockport County.

According to Capology estimates, the attacker who was once a part of Barcelona’s academy, earns £3,000 per week at Aston Villa.

That naturally put him among the lowest earners in the Villa squad with their lowest earner that wasn’t out on loan being Spanish defender Andres Garcia on £15,000 per week.

Barry, who spent the second half of last season back on loan at Stockport as he helped The Hatters reach the League One play-off final, would therefore be on a modest wage by even Wednesday’s standards from last season.

Still in the Championship, Sheffield Wednesday had some big contracts in the 2025/26 Championship season, albeit they had the second lowest payroll, only bigger than Charlton Athletic, due to the high-profile departures of the likes of Barry Bannan, Josh Windass and Michael Smith.

Jerry Yates, who spent the second half of last season on loan from now League One rivals Luton Town, was said to be earning £22,500 per week with their highest permanently contracted players being Ike Ugbo, Dom Iorfa and Nathaniel Chalobah on £20,000 per week – and the last two players have since left the club.

Their departures are expected to be a representation of the wage bill coming down significantly at Hillsborough, especially with the sales of Svante Ingelsson and Olaf Kobacki to Stoke City and Wisla Plock already this summer.

Charlie McNeill, Rio Shipston, Pierce Charles, Logan Stretch, Guilherme Siqueira, Jarvis Thornon and Sean Fusire were the only players said to be earning less than the £3,000 per week that Barry has been on at Villa Park, with Shipston having now departed and Charles set to sign for Manchester City ahead of a loan move to Queens Park Rangers.
