Luciano Vulcano has taken his first job since leaving Sunderland, becoming head coach of AC Monza’s youth team.
According to Sunderland Echo, he joined Régis Le Bris as assistant head coach last summer but left by mutual consent after they could not find the right fit in the coaching structure.
Monza will be back in Serie A next season after promotion, and the youth role gives Vulcano his first taste of being a head coach. The Italian harbours ambitions of taking a senior job in the future.
Earlier this week he reflected on his Sunderland spell in a social post, calling it unforgettable, expressing gratitude and hoping to return to work in the country and league one day, while thanking the club.
Sunderland initially chose not to replace Vulcano, but have now added former Southampton and Portugal centre back José Fonte to the coaching staff. He starts on Monday ahead of the club’s pre-season tour of the US, in his first coaching role since retiring.
Director of football Florent Ghisolfi said Fonte brings top-level experience, energy and leadership, and that those qualities can add value as the club look to push forward in the Premier League and in Europe. He welcomed Fonte to Sunderland.
Fonte will join Le Bris’s staff alongside Michael Proctor, Alessandro Barcherini, James Brayne (set pieces), Neil Cutler (goalkeepers) and Isidre Ramón Madir (chief analyst).
